How to Grow Potatoes in Pots and Grow Bags

Potatoes are surprisingly easy to grow in containers. A single grow bag can produce several kilograms of potatoes, and harvesting is as simple as tipping the bag out.

Chitting Seed Potatoes

Place seed potatoes in an egg box in a bright, cool spot for three to four weeks before planting. Short, sturdy green shoots mean they are ready to go into the soil.

Planting and Earthing Up

Plant potatoes about 15 cm deep with shoots facing up. As the leaves grow, keep covering the stems with more compost. This is called earthing up, and it increases the harvest.

When to Harvest

New potatoes are ready when the plants flower, usually ten to twelve weeks after planting. For larger storage potatoes, wait until the leaves turn yellow and die back.
